Designing light, flow and function for South Turramurra House

South Turramurra House is a design-led knockdown rebuild on Sydney’s Upper North Shore, reflecting what’s possible when a custom home is shaped entirely around the way a modern family wants to live, now and into the future.

Positioned on a north rear-facing block, the design responds directly to site and lifestyle. The focus was on maximising winter sun, strengthening connection to the backyard, and creating flexible, highly functional zones that support the rhythms of everyday family life. The result is a light-filled home that balances architectural detail with practical functionality.

At its core, the main living space is defined by a raked ceiling rising to approximately 3.75 metres, enhancing volume, light and openness.

Warm timber tones, V-groove panelling and a feature fireplace add depth and texture, while the kitchen anchors the home with durable, family-focused design — including a raised benchtop height and oversized island with underneath storage built for everyday use and entertaining.

Behind the scenes, a highly efficient layout supports seamless living. A concealed service spine connects the garage, mudroom, laundry and butler’s pantry, streamlining daily movement through the home. Generous, integrated storage ensures space for everything from bikes and surfboards to camping gear and future caravan parking.

The floorplan is designed to evolve over time, with light-filled living zones, flexible breakout spaces, and strong indoor–outdoor flow connecting to the alfresco and backyard.

Set on a sloping site, careful engineering and design resolved drainage and water management challenges through strategic grading and stormwater solutions, ensuring long-term durability. Sustainability was also embedded through passive solar orientation, high-performance insulation, solar generation and a 10,000L underground rainwater tank.
