Ceiling fans are an often-overlooked cooling solution for homes, and they can provide a range of benefits when it comes to staying comfortable and saving money on energy bills.

In preparation for the new 7 Star Energy rating requirements, we discuss how ceiling fans contribute to achieving a 7-star rating, and also how they can be integrated into the interior design of a home for a seamless and stylish look.

The Benefits of Using Ceiling Fans and How They Improve Your Home Energy Rating

First, let's discuss the importance of ceiling fans for cooling a home. While air conditioning is the go-to cooling solution for many people, it can be expensive to run and can contribute to high energy bills. Ceiling fans, on the other hand, are much more energy-efficient and can be used in conjunction with air conditioning to help circulate cool air throughout a room; truth be told, the software that assesses your home’s energy rating loves ceiling fans too. In fact, using a ceiling fan in conjunction with air conditioning can allow you to set your thermostat a few degrees higher, saving you money on your energy bill while still staying comfortable. Ceiling fans can often be the difference between a 6-star home and a 7-star home.

Ceiling fans also have the added benefit of being able to provide a cool breeze even when the air conditioning isn't on. By circulating air throughout a room, ceiling fans can help create a more comfortable environment, especially in warmer months. Additionally, ceiling fans can help prevent stagnant air and moisture build-up, which can lead to issues like mould and mildew.

Using Ceiling Fans as Decorative Features in Your Living Space

Below Carly Beautyman, Lead Interior Designer for Hall & Hart outlines how ceiling fans can be integrated into the interior design of a home.

Ceiling fans come in a variety of styles and finishes, making it easy to find one that complements your home's existing decor. From sleek and modern to rustic and traditional, there's a ceiling fan out there for every style.

Ceiling fans can also be used as a statement piece in a room. For example, a large, ornate ceiling fan can serve as a focal point in a living room or bedroom, adding visual interest and personality to the space. And with options like wooden blades, textured finishes, and unique lighting fixtures, ceiling fans can be customized to fit your specific design aesthetic.

Ceiling fans installed in bedrooms are common practice, and whilst ceiling fans don’t have to be a statement piece, they can elevate a room with some curvature of the blades to suit a home’s furniture styling. Often in bedrooms, they seamlessly integrated into the décor and styling.

In other instances, ceiling fans can enhance the aesthetic and character of a bedroom style. With ceiling fans available in different shapes, styles, and colours, they can of course used as more of a focal point, with bold architectural features. Additionally, with the number of colour choices increasing, there is a high chance you will be able to colour-match to your room’s palette.

A ceiling fan with LED lighting can also provide accent and task lighting and comfort for areas of relaxation or work.

The Future of Home Energy Efficiency

With the 7-star certification requirements due October 2023, ceiling fans will likely play a large role in many homes achieving a 7-star energy rating. "Ceiling fans are an important and often-overlooked cooling solution for homes, and we are excited to see the development of new styles and interior design over the coming years as we begin to incorporate more passive and low-energy heating and cooling solutions into new homes," says Carly
