There's something special about the bond between a person and their pet. It's a bond that's built on unconditional love, trust, and loyalty.

How Architects Are Incorporating Pet-Friendly Features into New Home Builds

For many, their furry friend is more than just a pet; they're a beloved member of the family. And just like any family member, they deserve to be treated with care, love, and attention.

It's no surprise then that architects are now being asked to consider the needs of these furry family members when designing new homes. From built-in dog beds to specialised wash stations, architects are incorporating features that are designed to make the lives of both pets and their owners easier and more enjoyable.

Welcome to the new trend emerging in the world of architecture and home design: Barkitecture.

Recognising Dogs as Beloved Members of the Family in Home Design

Barkitecture refers to the inclusion of features and considerations in new home builds that are specifically designed for dogs and their owners and is quickly becoming a must-have design feature.

Due to the growing significance of pets in our lives, Barkitecture is on the rise in all new modern home designs. For many people, dogs are more than just domestic animals but are considered as integral family members. Dogs have an extraordinary ability to bring people together and provide us with a sense of love that is difficult to replicate. These four-legged companions provide us with endless amounts of joy, comfort, and companionship. It's no wonder, then, homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to make their living spaces more accommodating to pets, and Barkitecture presents the perfect solution.

Design Features That Make Your Home More Pet Friendly

    • Built-in feeding stations: Many new homes now include feeding stations that are built into kitchen islands or cabinets. These stations are designed to make it easier for owners to feed their pets while keeping the area clean and organised.

    • Built-in dog beds: Instead of buying a separate dog bed, many homeowners are now opting for built-in dog beds that are integrated into the design of their homes. These beds are often located in out-of-the-way areas, such as under stairs, within laundry cabinetry or in a corner of the living room.

One of our interior designers, Crystal recently designed a sweet little nook for our client's beloved pet, Lucy.  "Our client wanted a discreet nook, away from distractions where Lucy could have a sneaky nap anytime throughout the day. The simple kennel cabinetry allowed for the clients own upholstered bedding that could be easily removed and washed when needed. A handy feature was also having the kennel by the laundry door which gave a view to the backyard for Lucy to oversee at all times."

    •    Outdoor dog runs: For homeowners with larger dogs and larger blocks, outdoor dog runs are becoming increasingly popular. These runs provide a secure area for dogs to play and exercise without the need for constant supervision.

    •    Custom built washing stations: Typically located in the mudroom, laundry or garage, these stations are equipped with built-in showers or tubs, providing a convenient and mess-free way to bathe your furry friend. With high walls to prevent splashing and keep small dogs at bay and, low walls to make it easier for larger dogs to access the shower, a handheld showerhead for easy washing, and a drain for effortless clean-up, these pet-friendly wash stations are gaining popularity among homeowners who want to pamper their pets in a hygienic way while keeping their homes clean and tidy.

Our design team recenltly created a very stylish dog washing station in our client's family home.....
